Harmony Haven, a 501c3 non-profit organization, is not a
United Way charity, receives no tax dollars or government assistance, maintains
no contracts with city/county government
for animal control services, and is not affiliated with any national
organization.
Our operation depends on fund-raisers, contributions, and memberships.
SUCCESS STORIES
 |
This success story features Zeke, our gentle giant. We have had Zeke since he was a tiny
puppy, barely weaned. But Zeke grew and Grew and GREW. (No one goes hungry at Harmony Haven!)
Although he is a big handsome guy, most people want to adopt smaller, cuter breeds. Zeke
is very gentle and well behaved - waiting his turn to be petted. He gets along well with
other dogs and loves human contact. After several years a very special person saw his
picture and could tell Zeke needed a loving home. Zeke is now enjoying being in the house
with his new family and also running and playing in the yard with the other family dog.
And as an added benefit, all this activity has caused the "potential Weight Watchers candidate"
to slim down a bit. We are especially delighted when one of our great, larger dogs finds a
home!

Only 1 out of 10 dogs born ever get a home. Only 1 out of 12 cats born ever find a home.

them. (Courtesy of USHS)
"Saving one animal will not change the world, but it will change the world for that
one animal."
VIGO COUNTY ANIMAL COALITION VERY ACTIVE
At long last, Terre Haute is addressing the severe stray animal problem. The VCAC,
organized in early 2007, includes animal organizations, city and county representatives,
and individuals committed to promoting the welfare of animals. The following items describe
some of the co-operative programs and events aimed at the overpopulation problem.
Project HOPE continues to offer free spay/neuter surgeries for qualified pet owners. A photo
ID or driver's license showing residency and a food stamp card or Medicaid card are the only
requirements. Registration takes place every Thursday, 11:30 - 2:30 at the Salvation Army;
various other locations are scheduled monthly. By the end of February, 1847 spay/neuters
have been done: 696 female cats, 447 male cats, 424 female dogs, 280 male dogs. We are
happy to report that the City Administration is supporting the program for Terre Haute.
We are hoping funds will be forthcoming to support the program for those living in the county.
Spay/Neuter Awareness Week was a big success with flyers, posters, and radio and TV spots.
The weekend event was held at Honey Creek Square. Harmony Haven, Project Hope, the
Spay/Neuter League, and the TH Humane Society had information tables. The two shelters
brought animals. We had our display, photo albums of adoptable pets, and brochures.
We also showed our Manchester puppies: Emma, Echo, Elton and Evan; our minpin Baby Girl;
and our basset/beagle Bailey. They received lots of attention and admiration! Plans are
being made for next year's event.
There is now a telephone number for information about ALL the low-cost programs and assistance
available for spay/neuter. 812-232-SPAY (812-232-7729)
GIFTS, DONATIONS AND SERVICE
We are so grateful to the people who support us through
volunteering, gifts, donations, and memorials. However, because many
people are sensitive about having their names on the internet, we have
chosen to include names only in the mailed copies of our newsletters.
The kindness and generosity of all who give to Harmony
Haven makes lives better for the animals in our care.
Since we do not receive any tax dollars from the city
or the county, donations (tax-deductible) are always most welcome!
SPRING CLEANING ARTICLES NEEDED
We can always use old towels, sheets, blankets, quilts, etc. to be used as bedding for our
animals. With nearly 160 residents, we go through these items quickly. Our Wish List also
includes cat food, scoopable litter, bleach, paper towels, laundry detergent, Pine-Sol,
Febreze, peroxide, alcohol, aluminum cans and ink catrtidges (Dell, HP, Lexmark).
Hours are Wednesday - Friday: 2:30 - 5:00 and Saturday 1:30 - 4:00 Closed Sunday - Tuesday
SUPPORT
We are particularly grateful to the Fifth Third Bank for their fundraiser on our behalf.
The staff and customers at all four branches participated with monetary donations and pet
supplies. It was extremely appreciated!
The PETCO FOUNDATION has named Harmony Haven as a partner in the annual "Spring A Pet" Fund
Raiser to support community animal welfare organizations. We deeply appreciate PETCO's
continuing support!
We have nearly 160 animal residents. So we are particularly grateful for the pet food
donations from individuals and from businesses. Baesler's Market and the Wal-Mart stores
have been very generous.
RECENT ADOPTIONS
It is always a pleasure to see our animals placed in good approved homes. To ensure the best
possible match, we require an application, interview, references, and when possible, a home
visit. Recent adoptions include: Muffin-Lhasa Apso, Beaumont-hound/shepherd,
Sprinkles-schnauzer, Midnight-chow, Skamp-cockapoo, Jessie-Manchester terrier,
Taylor-cocker spaniel, Cinnamon-minpin, and Elton-Manchester mix.
Also adopted were 3 cats: Sparta, Pie and Moon.
We always enjoy receiving emails, phone calls and pictures from the adoptive families.
