FOSTER CARE PROCEDURE

When a Harmony Haven member calls the Shelter Manager, President, or Vice President, s/he will check to see if a foster home is available for the type of animal described by the member. If a home is not available, the process ends. However, if a home is available, s/he calls the foster home to see if they are ready to receive the pet.

If the potential foster care giver agrees to provide a home for the pet, a member of the Harmony Haven Clinical Staff will rescue the pet and transport him/her to the veterinarian. At this time a dog will be tested for heartworms and, if necessary, treated. Following this step, the dog or cat will be examined by the veterinarian, given a rabies inoculation, and spayed or neutered. The Clinical Staff member will administer a feline leukemia test on a cat and de-worm and inoculate both cats and dogs against distemper.

An adoption counselor will contact the foster family for final verification of their willingness to accept the pet. If the foster family declines, the adoption fee will be waived and a top priority will be given to finding a home for the pet over any other pet. The pet will temporarily reside with an adoption counselor or a member of the clinical staff. If the foster family is still willing to provide a home for the pet, the adoption counselor delivers the pet and contract to the foster family. The foster family will sign the contract and accept the foster animal. At this point the adoption process will begin.
