Harmony Haven, a 501c3 non-profit organization, is not a United Way charity, receives no tax dollars or government assistance, maintains no contracts with city/county government
for animal control services, and is not affiliated with any national organization.
Our operation depends on fund-raisers, contributions, and memberships.

SUCCESS STORIES

This is the story of a survivor.  Molly, a tiny mixed breed black cocker spaniel puppy was abandoned in a cardboard box.  This small box also contained several larger puppies, and Molly was on the bottom, almost smothered.  She was very weak and at first we were not sure she would live.  Molly was fed puppy formula and baby food to build her strength.  She was kept separate from the other pups so she would not be injured or have to compete for food.  She responded to the special loving care and now Molly is healthy, playful, and adorable.

 SON-SHINE CENTER VISITS HARMONY HAVEN

The Harmony Haven animals were very happy to welcome the children and leaders of the Son-Shine Center of Casey, Illinois.  The children donated pet supplies, treats, and toys and gave the animals lots of love and attention.  The children were model guests and the animals enjoyed meeting them.

GENERAL SUPPORT

We have approximately 160 animal residents.  So we are particularly grateful for the pet food donations from individuals and from businesses.  Baesler's Market and the Wal-Mart stores have been very generous.

We continue our partnership with the Purina Very Best Pet Network through the Marshall and Terre Haute Wal-Marts.

TERRE HAUTE PETCO RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD

We have learned that our local PETCO has received the "Store of the Year" award for store standards and execution.  This award was given at the National Conference to one store in each of six regions.  Our region contains 900 stores.   So our sincere congratulations go to Manager Nancy Wendling and all of the staff.  PETCO has been very supportive over the years and especially helpful and friendly when we bring our animals on Adoption Days.  An award richly deserved!

UPDATE ON CITY'S STRAY ANIMAL PROBLEM

Project HOPE continues to register lower income pet owners for free spay/neuter surgeries.  Registration is 11:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. every Thursday at the Salvation Army Headquarters at 234 South Eighth Street.  October dates will also include Fri., Oct. 12, 1:00-5:00 at the Locust Street IGA and Sat., Oct. 20, 10:00-3:00 at Rural King.  If you know anyone who can benefit from this program to reduce the severe animal overpopulation problem, please pass along this information.

GIFTS, DONATIONS AND SERVICE

We are so grateful to the people who support us through volunteering, gifts, donations, and memorials.  However, because many people are sensitive about having their names on the internet, we have chosen to include names only in the mailed copies of our newsletters.

The kindness and generosity of all who give to Harmony Haven makes lives better for the animals in our care.

Since we do not receive any tax dollars from the city or the county, donations (tax-deductible) are always most welcome!

HAPPENINGS

We continue to promote adoptions by taking animals to various locations in the community and through our local website and the national Petfinder.  Adoptions continue at a fairly steady rate.  We do have a large supply of healthy socialized cats and kittens.  You can help promote cat adoptions by recommending Harmony Haven to those who may be interested in adopting.

We have two dogs, Austin and Beaumont, who are currently undergoing treatment for heartworm.  This treatment is quite expensive.  If you would like to help Austin or Beaumont with a small special get-well donation, it would be greatly appreciated.

FUND RAISING

We continue to collect aluminum cans, ink cartridges (except Epson) and cell phones to recycle for fund raising.

Due to a recent large influx of animals, especially cats, our need for supplies is greatly increased.  Our wish list includes CAT FOOD, paper towels, BLEACH, peroxide, SCOOPABLE LITTER, Pine-Sol, BLEACH, laundry detergent, Febreze, alcohol, mineral oil, baking soda, and brooms.

You may not have room in your home for a new pet, but you could be a surrogate pet guardian by sponsoring a dog or cat for $10 a month.  If you choose to help, we will send you a colored picture of your special pet.

DID YOU KNOW?

*** Heartworm in cats and dogs is transmitted by mosquitoes.  There is a test,
       prevention and treatment.
*** Tapeworm in cats and dogs is transmitted through the flea cycle.  This is
       prevented by monthly flea treatment.
*** Roundworm is transmitted from a nursing mother to her offspring.
*** Dogs have two litters per year with an average of 6-12 puppies.
Cats may have five litters per year averaging 5-6 kittens.
*** Most veterinarians and vet techs are very willing to answer questions.
       When in doubt, CALL!

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.  Quote by Mahatma Gandhi (1869 - 1948)
