ANNUAL YARD SALE FRIDAY AND SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 22 & 23

Harmony Haven is getting ready for its big Indoor/Outdoor yard sale.  We extend a big Thank-You to the Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church for donating a large number of items for our sale.  This is one of our main fund-raisers and requires a lot of preparation before and during the event.  We need volunteers to help price and sort the many items as well as work on the days of the sale.  Many of the things will be displayed inside in case (heaven forbid) it rains!  If you have an hour or two to help, we would be most appreciative!  You may still drop off sale items at the shelter.  Call Anita at 535-3819.   Tell your friends, and of course, come the days of the sale and SHOP!

SUCCESS STORIES

Ginger, a brown and white purebred Chihuahua, was dumped at Harmony Haven in the spring of 2005.  She was running around near the front door and when an HH volunteer tried to pick her up to take her in the building, the dog promptly bit her on the hand.  Eventually she was persuaded to come inside. From her behavior it was quite obvious she had been abused. It was also obvious she was highly intelligent.  She did not trust anyone to touch her or pet her.  Apparently she had been kicked many times because she hated feet/shoes and would go after any shoes passing too close and try to bite them.
After a great deal of time, kindness, and patience she eventually let the director pet her, pick her up and carry her around the shelter.  When tested with cats it was discovered she really liked them and wanted to play with them.  She also got along well with the other dog living inside the building.  She gradually became more trusting around other people, but it took about a year before she was ready to be considered for adoption.  A very nice family who had two children took a special interest in Ginger.  They had had Chihuahua dogs before and knew a lot about the breed and their personality.  They came for many visits and won her trust.  They always brought her a toy or treat.  Eventually, Ginger went home with them for an overnight visit, then a weekend visit, and finally a full week visit.  The bond was becoming strong and they wanted to adopt her and she wanted to be with them.  They took her with the understanding they could bring her back if things did not go well; this is always the arrangement of Harmony Haven for all animals adopted from the shelter.  Ginger is so happy now.  She loves her family, sleeps in their bed, enjoys having her baths regularly and adores her new "brother and sister" who play with her.  It is a very happy ending for a good little dog whose early life was surely quite sad.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Because of irresponsible people continuing to "dump" animals, Harmony Haven is on overload.  If you can spare a few hours to assist us, it would be a great help.  There are lots of jobs that are not strenuous, but will release the employees to do the more physical tasks.  And the best part of volunteering is getting to meet and enjoy our beautiful animals and knowing you have made a difference!

CONTINUING SUPPORT

Our animal residents consume pet food in great quantities.  So we are particularly grateful for the pet food donations from individuals and from businesses.  Baesler's Market, PETCO, and the two Wal-Marts in Terre Haute and Marshall, Illinois have been very generous.

We continue our partnership with the Purina Very Best Pet Network through the Marshall Wal-Mart and the two stores in Terre Haute.  We have posted photos of our adoptable pets on their Display Boards.  See them in the Pet Department.

GIFTS, DONATIONS AND SERVICE

We are so grateful to the people who support us through volunteering, gifts, donations, and memorials.  However, because many people are sensitive about having their names on the internet, we have chosen to include names only in the mailed copies of our newsletters.

The kindness and generosity of all who give to Harmony Haven makes lives better for the animals in our care.

Since we do not receive any tax dollars from the city or the county, donations (tax-deductible) are always most welcome!

NEEDS

We continue to collect aluminum cans to recycle.  Our wish list also includes dog and cat food, scoopable litter, paper towels, Pine-Sol, bleach, laundry detergent, Febreze, alcohol, baking soda, litter deodorant and gift/gas cards.

HAPPENINGS

Baesler's Market, as part of their program for "Giving Back to the Community", named Harmony Haven as the recipient of their 2006 "Perks for Pets" fundraiser.  In July, Bob Baesler presented the check to Sue Reel, president.  Watch for the picture in the Tribune-Star.  We are so thankful to Mr. Baesler for his generous and consistent support.

Children who participated in the Vigo County Public Library's Summer Reading Program this year were reading to help the animals.  Eli Lilly recently made a donation to the library to partner with them in their effort to encourage children to read throughout the summer.  Since the library felt the animals at Harmony Haven had a big influence on their reading statistics, the donation was extended to us.  The program was a huge success, with 1227 children signing up and pledging to read 23,692 books.  Our thanks to Cindy Rider, Sarah Campbell, the Library Staff and the wonderful young readers!

In August, the Family Y invited us to talk with the children in the 5-6 year-old program.  Shirley Jones and Carol Walker took B&W, Harmony Haven's "Ambassador Cat" to visit the group.  The children were of course delighted with the cat and also learned something about pet responsibility.  Everyone enjoyed the experience; we are invited back in the fall.

We are now working with rescue groups who are able to transport and place dogs in good homes.  States that have strong spay/neuter laws actually have a shortage of dogs for adoption!  Would that Vigo County had that problem!

Additional fence panels have been installed in the west kennels, giving the dogs individual 12 foot runs - they love them!  We will soon be installing perimeter fencing on the west side to provide a third large exercise yard.

Yes, we are here!  We will soon be replacing our sign that was torn down by vandals.  It will read "Harmony Haven, Inc.".
