We are ready to welcome spring and looking forward
to the many good things in our future plans.

PET FOOD RECALL

We were immediately aware of the problem and sought out all the information regarding the affected brands and containers.  We checked all of our food supplies carefully to ensure the safety and health of our animals.  We suffered no ill effects and hope your pets did not have any problems.

SUCCESS STORIES

Simone was born May 3, 2003 and is the last of our “Second Generation” residents.  Her story begins with the tale of Bonnie and Clyde.  They were traveling together for some time and eventually came to Harmony Haven.  Soon after their arrival, Bonnie presented us with six bundles of joy.  Although Clyde was not the father, he took his job as Bonnie’s companion very seriously and baby-sat the puppies for long periods.  Four of the puppies were soon adopted and the fifth found his “forever family” as an adult.
It was not until this winter that Simone, now age 3½, traveled to Wisconsin to join her special family.  We immediately received pictures of Simone in her new home and now have an April update: Simone is doing just great.  She just loves all the attention from the kids and has really settled in nicely.  She is such a good girl!  We truly believe that she was just the right fit for our family.”     But - had she not been adopted, as a No-Kill shelter, we would have given her a lifetime home with loving care.   This is what a No-Kill shelter is all about!

 SUPPORT

We continue our partnership with the Purina Very Best Pet Network through the Marshall and Terre Haute Wal-Marts.  During your visits to these stores, be sure to look at the photos of our adoptable pets that are displayed in the pet department.

We were delighted to have student volunteers come from ISU, Rose-Hulman and
St. Mary-of-the-Woods College.  A lot was accomplished with the help of these dedicated young people.  And the animals loved the extra attention!

We are so pleased to have the growing support and involvement of school-age children.  Several classes and teachers collected supplies or had fundraisers of various types.

HAPPENINGS

Like many of you, Harmony Haven also experienced some weather-related challenges that included frozen pipes and furnace repairs.  We successfully dealt with those issues and everything is now in fine condition once again.  Through the harsh weather conditions, the high-quality care of the animals was maintained.

We have instituted a new method of promoting adoptions and community awareness of Harmony Haven’s presence.  We create and place monthly colored flyers with four pictures of adoptable animals in businesses and veterinary offices.  If you have suggestions or contacts where more flyers could be placed, please call us.

Even though the winter season is not the prime time for adoptions, we are very pleased that we placed a significant number of cats and dogs in good “furever”  homes.

We continue to be busy with many trips to the vet to ensure the well-being of our residents.   All our incoming dogs are tested for heartworm and cats for feline leukemia.  And of course all our animals are spayed or neutered.  Vaccinations and medications for specific medical needs are administered onsite in our shelter medical area.   We believe that this kind of attention is critical to our ability to offer healthy animals for adoption.

CITY'S STRAY ANIMAL PROBLEM

Harmony Haven was represented at the January City Council Meeting and strongly supported a project to deal with the stray animal over-population through a city sponsored spay/neuter program.  We have been very encouraged that the expenditure of $20,000 for low-income assistance will help animals and animal owners as well as possibly alleviating the overload of companion animals at Harmony Haven.  We hope this program will be continued for several years.

WHY SPAY AND NEUTER?

“Every year in the United States an estimated 5 million animals lose their lives in shelters because they are homeless. That is one pet life lost every 6.5 seconds. The pet overpopulation epidemic is so staggering that for every animal born in the United States to have a home, each and every human being would have to own 6 dogs and 9 cats. So, in actuality a family of four…2 parents and 2 small children, would have to own 24 dogs and 36 cats. It costs U.S. taxpayers an estimated $2 billion each year to round up, house, kill and dispose of homeless animals.”

GIFTS, DONATIONS AND SERVICE

We are so grateful to the people who support us through volunteering, gifts, donations, and memorials.  However, because many people are sensitive about having their names on the internet, we have chosen to include names only in the mailed copies of our newsletters.

The kindness and generosity of all who give to Harmony Haven makes lives better for the animals in our care.

Since we do not receive any tax dollars from the city or the county, donations (tax-deductible) are always most welcome!
