SUCCESS STORIES

         HONEY

Several months ago we rescued a puppy who had been locked in an abandoned house by her owners.  She had been without food for a week and was starving.  Although she had been mistreated, she snuggled into the lap of the Harmony Haven member who brought her to our sanctuary.  "Honey" regained her health and was soon adopted.  Recently "Honey" returned to Harmony Haven to select a companion.  She chose "Licorice", an especially friendly and playful fellow.          LICORICE

What a Happy Ending!

We have recently placed 6 cats and 5 dogs in adoptive homes.
Cats: Bill, DJ, Precious, Peaches&Cream, Noel, & Minnie
Dogs: Jasmine, Licorice, Tiny, Baby Girl, & Buster
Seeing them in good homes makes it all worth while!

HAPPENINGS

In February Harmony Haven was invited to a meeting of the Preceptor Gamma Psi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.  Sherry Southwick, Anita Oswald and Sue Reel presented information about our mission and organization.  The sorority members warmly welcomed us and expressed an interest in doing a service project to benefit the animals of Harmony Haven.

Trinna Solomon, a regular volunteer, arranged for the ISU Delta Sigma Pi Business Fraternity to do a volunteer work day for us.  Among their activities were cleaning, sorting, walking dogs, and petting cats.  Their help was greatly appreciated.

Fred Webber and friends in the Rose Hulman Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity completed a volunteer work project involving cleaning and organizing various areas of the building, especially the feeding kitchen.  Their projects  reached areas that our limited staff normally do not have time to complete.  Wow! What an improvement.

The Lost Creek Elementary Girl Scout Troup and their leader, Leah Myers, made "fish" catnip socks for the Harmony Haven cats.  The cats send a big thank-you!

Judy Avenatti of the A-B-C Nursery in Clinton had a pet food drive for the Harmony Haven animals.  The children were excited about the project and the animals were delighted.  A wonderful gift!

Caroline Bradley, teacher and long-time member, and the children of Rio Grande Elementary School collected and donated a large amount of pet food, toys, treats, cleaning supplies, and aluminum can tabs.  We greatly appreciate their efforts!  We love having young people involved in our mission to help our many homeless animals.

CONTINUING SUPPORT

Our animal residents consume pet food in great quantities.  So we are particularly grateful for the pet food donations from individuals and from businesses.  Baesler's Market, PETCO, and the Marshall, Illinois Wal-Mart have been very generous.

We continue our partnership with the Purina Very Best Pet Network through the Marshall Wal-Mart.  They are introducing newly designed boards that display photos of our adoptable pets.  See them in the Pet Department.

GIFTS, DONATIONS AND SERVICE

A very special thanks to our Sunday crew of dedicated volunteers who give up part of their week-end to care for our more than 100 animals: Butch Brown, Carol Dunham, Steve Dunham, Ron Engle, Shirley Jones, Faye Kuckewich, Brian Rider, and Mary Thompson.

You may have read the article in the Tribune-Star about the winner of the Pet Idol contest, Dingo, who passed away before she was awarded her prizes.  Her owner, Colleen Chestnut, generously gifted Harmony Haven with Dingo's prizes.   We really appreciate her thinking of the Harmony Haven animals.

We are so grateful to the people who support us through volunteering, gifts, donations, and memorials.  However, because many people are sensitive about having their names on the internet, we have chosen to include names only in the mailed copies of our newsletters.

The kindness and generosity of all who give to Harmony Haven makes lives better for the animals in our care.

FUND RAISING

We are delighted to announce we received a very generous donation for shelter equipment we requested.  This will enable us to purchase new and additional equipment that will improve the quality of care for the animals.  We have been operating for almost 5 years; normal wear and tear dictates replacement of basic shelter items.

We continue to collect aluminum cans, ink cartridges (except Epson) and cell phones to recycle for fund raising.  Our wish list also includes dog and cat food, scoopable litter, paper towels, Pine-Sol, bleach, laundry detergent,  Febreze, peroxide, alcohol, mineral oil, baking soda, litter deodorant, and empty blue plastic Lay's potato chip cans.

We are selling coupons through the generosity of Baesler's Market.  A $10 coupon will purchase $10 worth of groceries or gas.  (So your cost is zero.)  The coupons come in $10 and $25 denominations.  Call us - 535-3819.

The PETCO FOUNDATION is sponsoring the "Spring a Pet" Fund Raiser to support community animal welfare organizations March 12 - April 16.  We are so pleased to announce that part of this year's proceeds will go to Harmony Haven!  Do stop in the local PETCO, support this effort, and thank Manager Nancy Wendling for choosing Harmony Haven for this event.  We deeply appreciate PETCO's continuing support!

KENNEL PROJECT

Our kennel project is moving toward completion as we recently installed 5 more doggie doors; additional interior and exterior work to follow.  A big Thank-You to Carol & Ken Walker and David Hemrich for their work.
